FREE TIBET

This Sunday, April 6th 2008, saw thousands of people take to the streets of London, lining the route of the Olympic torch relay, to protest against China's appalling human rights record and calling for an end to the occupation of Tibet. Joe Komodo was there....

"Sunday was a truly inspiring day and made me proud again to be a Londoner. Our snowy streets gave the platform and the public supported The Free Tibet protesters who were loud and brilliant and completely stole the media spotlight away from the athletes and politicians and shone it brightly onto the suffering of the Tibetans. I was thrilled to be amongst them in the heated and emotional atmosphere and you could really feel the electricity of change in the air. We knew our voices would be heard around the world and that the journey of this Torch, supposed to symbolise Olympic ideals of harmony and peace through sport, has come to be the focus of the worlds outrage at the two-faced Chinese government and their policy of suppression by technology and brute force.

I keep hearing this argument that Politics should not be mixed with sport, but then please tell me what the Chinese Governments Ambassador was doing carrying the torch on our streets as part of the athletes parade?
Why is the torch engraved with Tibetan graphics?
Why is the Torch going to Mt. Everest (whilst all other climbers will be banned) and then on through the occupied lands of Tibet?
Why did the Olympic committee not give their games to Beijing for the 2000 games, but then decided to give them for 2008 on the Chinese promises of soon to be improved human rights ?

When the world heard the news of Chinese police firing live bullets into a crowd of unarmed Tibetans in Gardze, killing at least 8 only two days before the torch was paraded through London, is it really so surprising that these demonstration took place and continue to as the torch continues it's journey ?!...
