SOS x KOMODO

A MESSAGE FROM KOMODO

At KOMODO we have always believed that giving back is a crucial part of what we do. From the very beginning our founder Mark Bloom has focused on helping people whenever and wherever we can as a company. Whether that’s drawing awareness to a cause, raising money or donating to charities. We have worked with SOS for many years and through our 1% for the planet scheme, we give 1% of all our profits to this wonderful charity in order to help them with all the brilliant work they do day in day out. We are very proud of our long-standing friendship with SOS and hope it continues for many years to come.

SO... WHAT DOES SOS DO?

At Sumatran Orangutan Society, our mission is to protect orangutans, their forests and their future. We work closely with partners and forest-edge communities in Sumatra to ensure that orangutans have a safe future in the wild. Our work ranges from tree planting to sustainable livelihood projects, and we’re proud to collaborate so closely with the people who live and work alongside orangutans every day.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THREATS TO THE ORANGUTAN?

One of the major threats facing orangutans In Sumatra is the loss of their forest home. Like most places across the globe, land in Sumatra is a valuable commodity, so forest is cleared to make way for agriculture, roads and other infrastructure. Much of the international focus on this forest clearance is on oil palms - a fast-growing crop which currently produces 36% of the world’s vegetable oil and is therefore found in a whole host of products, from shampoo and toothpaste to biscuits and bread – but the fashion industry is also a big contributor to deforestation as many fabrics are made from the pulp of tropical tree fibres.

KOMODO X SOS

KOMODO has been a faithful friend to SOS for nearly two decades, supporting us with everything from education in the early days to tree-planting in the present. With our partners on the ground, we have planted over 2 million trees to restore degraded land for orangutans and other wildlife. This means paying for tree seedlings, compost, and staff time for planting and ongoing maintenance, so we couldn’t have done it without donations from partners like KOMODO.

COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, we had to make some quick changes to our projects to ensure we were supporting communities and habitats in the most effective way in the face of this new and terrifying threat. Orangutans can easily contract human diseases, so we knew that if COVID-19 reached them it could be devastating for the species. To protect orangutans and people, the Indonesian government closed national parks in early 2020 – this was the right choice but left lots of tourist guides out of work. One of our major appeals in 2020 was therefore a drive to raise money for food parcels for the people left without work, and later to continue supporting them by paying them to be involved with planting trees in the buffer zone around Sumatra’s unique and precious Leuser Ecosystem. Almost 10,000 trees have now been planted through this particular project, helping 119 people to earn a living and support their families in a sustainable way

FINAL WORDS...

This is a reminder of the magic of planting trees – not only does it help prevent soil erosion, sequester carbon, stabilise the climate and provide a home for wildlife, but it has a huge impact on people too. A donation to SOS is far-reaching, and we are always grateful to partners like KOMODO for recognising that and sharing our story with their customers.
