The textile industry is responsible for over 10% of global carbon emissions producing waste that will stick around for millions of years. At KOMODO, we have always been dedicated to reducing environmental impact starting with the raw materials that make up all of our garments, to the packaging we use to ship out your orders. Stick around to find out more about our Zero Plastic movement.

From 2019 the design team at KOMODO sat down to discuss how we can become even more environmentally conscious by switching to plastic free alternatives that will help achieve our goal of using zero plastic. Specifically, our aim was to eliminate single use plastic from our supply chain as most of it cannot be recycled and is non-biodegradable.

One solution that we came up with is designing packaging, labels and components made from plant-based fibres and 100% recycled materials that do not add onto the excessive amounts of waste already produced by the textile industry and which are bad for the planet.

How We Have Converted To Zero Plastic.

Plant Starch Packaging

The most important element of our packaging is that it is compostable and biodegradable due to the plant starch it is made from. This means that it is able to biodegrade naturally in home compost. Microorganisms are able to break it down at the same rate as other organic materials in a compost pile, leaving no toxic residue.

All of our individual packaging contains the OK Compost HOME label on the back guaranteeing complete biodegradability, even in your garden compost heap.

Our KOMODO tags are made from 100% recycled paper and sisal string. Sisal is the fibre made from the Mexican Agave sisalana plant which creates a stiff and enduring fibre.

Buttons & Labels

We stopped using plastic buttons a long time ago. Instead, our buttons are made from the seeds of tropical palm trees commonly known as Corozo. And guess what? They are fully biodegradable too. Also, our wash care labels are made from organic cotton and branded labelling is made from recycled water bottles.

Ever since 1988, KOMODO have been committed to creating eco-friendly fashion. This means using quality organic, natural and eco fibres instead of synthetic ones like polyester and nylon which release 9 million plastic microfibres with every laundry wash. When it is necessary to use plastic based materials in our collections we always use recycled yarns and fabrics. There are many innovative fabrics made from Recycled PET (recycled polyester). Recycled PET is made from existing plastic materials such your old water and drinks bottles. The results of using such fabrics is having all the benefits of modern man-made plastics without creating additional plastic waste.

But, the biggest benefit is for the planet. Reduced use of fossil fuels, smaller carbon footprint and reusing waste materials are the reasons why we believe stopping the use of single-use plastic is the way forward.
